New York: Farrar Straus Giroux, 2011. First Edition. A fine copy in deep purple boards with gilt spine lettering in a fine, illustrated dustwrapper. Book and jacket are immaculate, with no flaws of any kind. River of Smoke is the second volume in The Ibis Trilogy, a work of historical fiction set in the first half of the 19th century. Sea of Poppies and Flood of Fire are the others in this fascinating series. A storm blows up on the Indian Ocean and the Ibis, a ship carrying a consignment of convicts and indentured laborers from Calcutta to Mauritius, is caught up in the whirlwind. River of Smoke follows its storm-tossed characters to the crowded harbors of China. There, despite efforts of the emperor to stop them, ships from Europe and India exchange their cargoes of opium for boxes tea, silk, porcelain and silver. The disparate group of survivors then find multiple ways to disrupt the city of Canton. The author has inscribed this copy on the title page. Seller Inventory # 010405
