Synopsis: This work is a collection of tales of the uncanny and of the effects of the supernatural horror. Several are concerned with episodes of the American Civil War and the California frontier. The tales are full of psychological realism which accentuate Bierce's sardonic humour.
About the Author: AMBROSE BIERCE (1842-1914?), American journalist, short-story writer, and poet, was born in Ohio, served in the Civil War, and then settled in San Francisco. He wrote for Hearst's Examiner, his wit and satire making him the literary dictator of the Pacific coast and strongly influencing many writers. He disappeared into war-torn Mexico in 1913.
