In writing this book, Baldwin did more than draw from his own experiences growing up with a religiously domineering father in 1930s Harlem: he wrote and re-wrote the work for ten years as a way to come to terms with the painful relationship with his father. In the novel as in Baldwin's own life, the hero's path to acceptance lies not in obedience and acceptance but in the intellectual liberation achieved through books and education.
