Publisher: Charles Scribner,... Date published: 1863 Format: Hardcover

Steel Plate engravings; chromolitho title page; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 411 pages; 1863 Charles Scribner. New York. 1st edition. Royal octavo in full green, grained morocco leather binding with elaborate, wide decorative borders impressed in black to the board edges and decorative titles in gilt to cover. Spine in six compartments with five raised bands and titles tooled in gilt to the leather spine; all edges gilt. Title page in black and red with a chromolithograph color main title; marbled endpages. Lavishly Illustrated from dense and fine steel plate engravings, mostly by the highly regarded John Sartain, after art and photos by various artists. The quality of the engraved and tissue guarded plates is quite exceptional. The timing of the book's publication, with an elaborate and costly production focused on the Royalty of Europe, while America was being consumed by the schism and violence of the Civil War, is quite striking. Leather at spine a little darkened and dulled; mild shelf rubbing to the morocco leather at the bottom front corners and tail end of the spine. A solid and handsome copy of this weirdly beutiful and untimely tome glorifying the royal figures of the Continent. VG . Oversize book may require additional charges for expedited or international shipping.
