Lavishly Illustrated from dense and fine steel plate engravings, mostly by the highly regarded John Sartain, after art and photos by various artists. The quality of the engraved and tissue guarded plates is quite exceptional. The timing of the book's publication, with an elaborate and costly production focused on the Royalty of Europe, while America was being consumed by the schism and violence of the Civil War, is quite striking.
