Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 1968, First U.S edition. Hardcover. 206 pp. 8vo. Purple dust jacket with drawing of a mother's crazed and intense psychological state of mind. 0.75" tear to jacket at top corner of spine and mild wear to foredge, else very good. This is the first English translation of an important novel by one of Spain's foremost contemporary writers. Experimental in form, lacking an obvious narrative line and conventional plot, it is a strange and shocking portrait of a woman's intense incestuous love for her son. One of the few works of fiction to treat the Oedipal relationship from the mother's viewpoint. Professor Bernstein was granted access to the new revisions and incorporated the author's latest changes and additions (among them an unpublished chapter) into this edition. Bernstein's introduction is an invaluable aid to understanding this rewarding, difficult work. Also included is Cela's postscript written for new Spanish edition and published here for the first time in any language.
