Mai 1916 in Iria Flavia, Gemeinde Padrón, Provinz A Coruña; 17. Januar 2002 in Madrid) war ein spanischer Schriftsteller und erhielt 1989 den Nobelpreis für Literatur. Sein Stil wurde als dunkler Realismus" oder auch Tremendismo" bezeichnet. Leben: Camilo José Cela wurde als Sohn eines Spaniers und einer Engländerin geboren. Sein Großvater, John Trulock, war Chef der ersten Eisenbahn in Galicien gewesen. 1925 übersiedelte die gesamte Familie nach Madrid. Während seiner Schulzeit erkrankte Camilo an Tuberkulose, so dass er sich in ein Sanatorium begeben musste (1931-1932), wo er viel Gelegenheit zu lesen hatte. 1934 begann er ein Medizinstudium an der Universidad Complutense de Madrid, das er bald aufgab. Statt dessen besuchte er Vorlesungen über Lyrik bei Pedro Salinas, dem er erste Gedichte zeigte und der ihn zum Schreiben ermunterte. Im Spanischen Bürgerkrieg kämpfte er auf der Seite der Frankisten und wurde an der Front verwundet. 1940 begann ein Jurastudium (das er ebenfalls bald abbrach) und veröffentlichte erste Werke. Nach dem Krieg widmete er sich dem Journalismus und arbeitete in der spanischen Zensurbehörde Cuerpo de Investigación y Vigilancia", der er sich selbst 1938 als Denunziant angeboten hatte.[1] Er veröffentlichte im Alter von 26 Jahren seinen ersten Roman La familia de Pascual Duarte (1942), der wegen der ungewöhnlich realitätsnahen Schilderung von brutalen Gewalttaten einen Skandal hervorrief und zeitweise von der Zensur verboten wurde. Damit wurde Cela schlagartig bekannt und begründete die Richtung des so genannten tremendismo" in Spanien. 1944 heiratete er María del Rosario Conde Picavea, die ihm zwei Jahre später einen Sohn schenkte, der nach ihm Camilo José getauft wurde. 1954 übersiedelt er auf die Insel Mallorca, die sein Hauptwohnsitz wurde. 1956 gründete er die Zeitschrift Papeles de Son Armadans. Das bekannteste seiner über 70 Werke ist La Colmena (Der Bienenkorb), ein in zahlreichen Erzählfragmenten angeordneter Roman über das Madrid der Nachkriegsjahre. Auch hier warf ihm die Zensur Unmoral und Pornographie vor, weswegen die Erstausgabe 1951 in Buenos Aires erschien; erst 1955 konnte der Roman in einer veränderten Fassung in Barcelona herauskommen. 1982 wurde es unter der Regie von Mario Camus verfilmt (Drehbuch J.L. Dibildos) und 1983 mit dem Goldenen Bären der Berliner Filmfestspiele ausgezeichnet. Seit 1957 war Cela Mitglied der Real Academia de la Lengua Española (Königlichen Spanischen Akademie). Von König Juan Carlos wurde er bald nach dem Übergang zur Demokratie als Parlamentsabgeordneter berufen; von 1977 bis 1979 wirkte er als Senator an der Redaktion der spanischen Verfassung mit. Am 10. März 1991 heiratete er Marina Castaño. 1996 verlieh ihm der spanische König den Titel Marqués de Iria Flavia. Auszeichnungen: 1987 wurde Cela der Príncipe de Asturias de las Letras verliehen. 1989 erhielt er den Nobelpreis für Literatur für seine reiche und eindringliche Prosa, in der mit verhaltenem Mitgefühl eine herausfordernde Vision der Ausgesetztheit des Menschen gestaltet wird".[2] 1994 erhielt er den Premio Planeta für La Cruz de San Andrés; dabei entfachte sich eine Polemik wegen Plagiats, da eine Autorin angab, Cela habe weite Teile ihres Romans kopiert. 1995 wurde ihm der renommierte Premio Cervantes zugesprochen.
