  • Format: Hardcover
148 pages. First edition, first printing of this sought after title in DJ with extras!!! This copy is signed by Carl Raswan on his personal red bookplate in both Arabic and English. Bookplate is adhered to inside front panel. Bookplate is not inscribed to anyone. FFEP has an Arabic inscription neatly written around the edges of the page. In the center of the page is a gift inscription in English, dated 1955. The inscription is not from Raswan, rather the bookplate is signed by Raswan. Also included is an 8 page promo insert for The Raswan Index and Handbook for Arabian Breeders. This rare promo includes complete sample pages from the Raswan Index while also noting that the Raswan Index will be available in December 1955. Nearly 50 entries plus the books Introduction. A third item is included in this sale. A 4 page insert Titled TWO ARABIAN MARES both registered as belonging to the HAMDANI strain, but unlike, Why? This insert includes 4 photographs of the mare/stallion and a breakdown of their bloodline. Getting back to The Arab and His Horse, book is tight and fold-out map still attached to inside rear panel. Tan boards with bright Red/Orange illustrated design matching that of the silhouette design on the DJ. Corners are sharp. The panels show some soiling that appears as if it could be wiped clean as the material lends itself to easy cleaning. Color frontispiece shows a couple of wrinkles at lower corner. The original DJ shows a couple of chips and a 1 inch closed tear to the front at the top. DJ shows spotting, mostly around edges on DJ rear and on the backstrip. Currently, DJ spotting is untreated, but with a little care, this can brighten up. A desirable collection of a most desired title, in the first printing, signed by Carl Raswan.

Mexico: Editorial Anthony. octavo. 1957-1967. Illustrations, facsimiles, bloodlines, maps, portraits. Dr. John Erich Flade quoted Raswan: "We never own a horse; it is entrusted to us." The classic set in all seven volumes comprised the knowledge of the great bloodlines, the Bedouin breeders of the last 100 years of the Arabians that made their way to Europe and America, and details which became essential to those who own and breed Arabians. Whether it was W.K. Kellogg or the Prince Fawaz as-Shaalan, the Arabian world mourned his untimely death. Each volume of his work was printed in small print runs of no more than 250 to 380 copies (some were totally lost in a flood before they could be distributed). Several volumes signed by Raswan in Arabic. Volumes 2-3 are continuous hence no title page for volume III (volume II list 4640, Volume III begins with 4641). Volume 7 was published posthumously with his extensive notes. While some of the information is in Al Khamsa Arabians II (1993) and Al Khamsa Arabians (1983), the firsthand work he did among the Bedouins is still essential in a complete understanding of his contribution. All volumes bound in pictorial cloth except volume 1 (?), all hinges and joints are fine, two volumes with rubbing to joints, first three volumes have previous owner's gift inscription, 3 volumes are signed, and all volumes are in clear mylar jackets.
