Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm vinyl jazz album, MGV-8001, Near-mint vinyl in a near-mint cardboard jacket (silver print on black labels.) This is a compilation of tracks from earlier Verve albums, including the cuts "April in Paris," "What Is This Thing Called Love," etc. Norman Granz's somewhat grudging album notes reveal that he found working with Bird "a trying experience." (Granz wanted to -- and did -- pair Parker with Afro-Cuban groups like Machito and Chico O'Farrill. Granz wanted to -- and did -- record Bird "playing pretty tunes . . . with strings." It's a wonder Granz didn't put Charlie Parker in the studio with Bobby "Boris" Pickett or Alvin and the Chipmunks.) Granz does -- grudgingly -- praise Parker's work on "Lady Be Good" and on the "Bird and Diz" album -- none of which material actually appears on this disc. Gee, thanks, Norman! Reduced from $32.
