110 x 177mm; pp. [159], [1] A TRUE FIRST PRINTING OF THE HITCH HIKER'S GUIDE, SIGNED BY ADAMS INSIDE THE FRONT COVER AT THE DENMARK STREET SIGNING, AND RETAINING THE 'DON'T PANIC!' LP AD. The Hitch Hiker's Guide began life as a radio series, debuting on 8 March 1978 and running for six episodes that spring. ("Hitchhiker's" was Adams' preferred spelling, but here the title is "Hitch Hiker's", a usage we will follow in this description.) In spite of its huge early success, the BBC did not pursue the publishing rights, which were acquired for £3,000 by the paperback publisher Pan Books. The novel was published on 12 October 1979, with distinctive cover art by Hipgnosis. By this time a second radio series had aired and The Hitch Hiker's Guide was a sensation. Just prior to publication, on October 10, the first book signing took place at the one year old Forbidden Planet shop in Denmark Street, London. As Adams was new to book signings he inscribed copies on the unusual location of the inside front cover (also a wise choice as the ink would have soaked through the thin paper of the main text block). Later signings tend not to be dedicated and are signed in biro to the title-page. In spite of the large print run (60,000 copies) the first printing is now very rare, owing to its fragility. Signed copies of the true first are very rare indeed, especially in early signings such as this. Finally, this copy retains the often missing flyer for the double LP version of HG2G. The book is in remarkable condition. The paper is age-toned and fragile as always, but is as good as any copy we have seen. The binding is square and unmarked, and the only condition point worth noting is some very faint spotting to the front cover, lower left corner. An exceptional copy in ever respect. We include a short letter from a previous dealer giving further details on provenance.

  • Format: Hardcover
A complete signed set of the American editions of the "increasingly inaccurately named Hitchhiker's Trilogy," one of the bestselling science fiction series of all time, and the two science fiction / fantasy comic detective novels featuring Dirk Gently. The five-volume Hitchhiker trilogy charts the improbable journeys of Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Zaphod Beeblebrox, and Marvin the Paranoid Android through space, time, bureaucracy, and the end(s) of the universe. What began as a 1978 BBC radio comedy quickly evolved into one of the beloved works of 20th-century speculative fiction. Adams redefined science fiction by making absurdity and existential dread not just tolerable, but wildly entertaining. If you recognize his catchphrases ?Don?t Panic? and ?42? (the answer to life, the universe, and everything), you belong to a large club of slightly nerdy readers, but in a good way. The two Dirk Gently novels explore similar themes about the meanness or meaninglessness of the universe, but with a more earth-bound setting. These seven books are Adams's entire fictional output. When he died from a heart attack in 2001, aged 49 years, he had struggled with writer's block for a full decade since his last novel, Mostly Harmless, was published. His only other book was a co-authored non-fiction work based on a BBC radio documentary that Adams presented. All five volumes are first American editions with numberlines each ending in 1. The books are all signed by the author. Adams, despite his popularity, wrote relatively few books and thus did not participate in as many signing events as he might have. His signed books are much less common than those of his contemporaries like Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. The seven books are all in nice condition. Life has a previous owners' name on the endpaper, a bit of spotting to the page edges, and light shelfwear at the extremities. It is inscribed on the fly-title, "To Mel, Best wishes, Douglas Adams." Tea-Time has minor spotting to the page edges. The other volumes are very nearly fine, with minor bumping to a few of the spine ends. They are all signed by Adams on the title pages.

The novels are described as "a trilogy in five parts", having been described as a trilogy on the release of the third book, and then a "trilogy in four parts" on the release of the fourth book. The US edition of the fifth book was originally released with the legend "The fifth book in the increasingly inaccurately named Hitchhiker's Trilogy" on the cover. Subsequent re-releases of the other novels bore the legend "The [first, second, third, fourth] book in the increasingly inaccurately named Hitchhiker's Trilogy". In addition, the blurb on the fifth book describes it as "the book that gives a whole new meaning to the word 'trilogy'". The first book was adapted from the first four radio episodes (the Primary Phase), with Arthur being rescued from Earth's destruction by Ford, meeting Zaphod and Trillian, coming to the planet of Magrathea to discover the true purpose of Earth, and ending with the group preparing to go to the Restaurant at the End of the Universe. It was first published in 1979, initially in paperback, by Pan Books, after BBC Publishing had turned down the offer of publishing a novelization, an action they would later regret. Condition: The Restaurant at the End of the Universe previous owner's name to front paste down. Jacket minor edgewear.
