First impression of the first edition in English. Translated from the German by Constantine Fitzgibbon. ***Author's debut novel. ***Near fine in buff cloth-covered boards with dark crimson title block and borders to the front board and dark crimson titles and borders to the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked. No bumps or creases to the boards. Top edge of text block stained dark crimson by the publisher (as called for), and remains unfaded. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. Light offsetting to the front free endpaper. Pages clean. No creases or tears. No reading lean. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, showing the original publisher's printed price of 7s 6d net. The fragile dustwrapper is virtually complete, with just very small loss to the head of the spine. Head and tail of spine and extremities of dustwrapper very slightly rubbed and creased. Spine of dustwrapper slightly discoloured but dustwrapper remains bright. ***208mm x 134mm. 104 pages. ***'We believe this to be one of the most moving novels to have come out of Germany (or indeed, Europe) since the war. Its story is simple -- a Lutheran padre's visit to attend a deserter's execution -- but its underlying theme, of the survival among the jungle ethics of war of the fundamental virtues of goodness, courage and Christian charity make it a deeply impressive book.' ***'A work of real artistry. His restraint and economy of line reveal beauty out of desolation, and the result is uplifting. A distinguished book of fine quality.' - R. W. Moore (Headmaster of Harrow School). ***'I read it with intense interest. I think it is one of the most remarkable war novels that have yet appeared -- perhaps the most outstanding of all.' - Captain Liddell Hart. (Quote and review quotes taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper). ***A first impression of the first edition in English, complete in its original dustwrapper, in very nice condition. A fragile production. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.***
