First American edition half-bound with marbled paper over red faux calf with gilt lettered and ruled spine and cream colored end pages. Frontispiece and nine additional full page illustrations [all present] by Thulstrup. Ten pages of ads at rear. [Scott pg. 21: Whatmore F7 6(c)]. Longmans cloth and wraps issues of Maiwa's Revenge were listed in Publisher Weekly, July 28, 1888 as were Harpers cloth and wraps issues (see Scott p.21). Scott seemingly arbitrarily chose the Harpers wraps issue as the first US edition. McKay chose the Harpers cloth issue and gives publication date of July 23, 1888. Brussel (Anglo-America Editions, East to West) supports the McKay date, although Scott apparently rejected it. In the absence of contrary data, there is no reason to reject the McKay date, although the prudent collector would be wise to collect all four candidates. The London first edition was published August 3, 1888. [Al Tella]. New York: Harper & Brothers (1888), 157 pages. This nice Nearly Fine copy has a modest soil and wear. Bookseller pencils on f.f.e. - tight binding that appears unread.

First Inpression. Octavo (19.5cm); black cloth covered boards titled in red on the cover and spine; 216pp.+ [16] ads. Spine ends and corners are mildly rubbed; light toning to spine; faint forward lean; former owner's printed bookplate inside front cover [Ernest A. Martin]; owner's personal library stamp on front free endpaper [ Jno. Walton Barker, hys bookes, Avallonlea] front hinge gently pulled; includes spot of rough erasure and evidence of bookplate removal on half-title page; Very Good+, lacking the dustjacket. Early adventure featuring Alan Quartermain: "It may be well to state that the incident of the "Thing that bites" recorded in this tale is not an effort of the imagination. On the contrary, it is "plagiarized." Mandara, a well-known chief on the east coast of Africa, has such an article, and uses it. In the same way the wicked conduct attributed to Wambe is not without a precedent. T'Chaka, the Zulu Napoleon, never allowed a child of his to live. Indeed he went further, for on discovering that his mother, Unandi, was bringing up one of his sons in secret, like Nero he killed her, and with his own hand." (the preface) ;AHEARN, APG 010c.
