Boston: Whipple & Damrell for The American Peace Society, 1843. In addition to important works on epidemiology, Thomas Hancock (1783-1849) here wrote the primary source for the events of the "Scullabogue Massacre" during the Irish rebellion of 1798. Somewhere between 100 and 200 suspected "loyalists" were killed by the Wexford rebels. Sadly, many of the victims were Quakers, who did not carry arms and had ministered charity to both sides. First published in 1829, this is a Very Good copy of a Later Printing. An uncommon title. Green cloth binding, decoratively stamped with a floral design; titled in gilt on the front cover as "Hancock on Peace." Clean text; 108 pages. Toning and scattered spotting to the textblock, which remains perfectly readable. Light rub to the margins; heavier on the spine where the head has frayed; small chip on the lower. The last endpaper has been removed. This copy has some interesting associations. There is a donation note (dated 1844) indicating a gift from the American Peace Society to the "Ciceronian Society." There are two blindstamped chops from the Society on the verso of the free endpaper ("Founded 1839 Georgetown, Ky").In an archival plastic protector.. Later Printing. Decorative Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
