With 12 double-sided black and white photographic plates, a double-page sketch-map, and a colour photographic frontispiece. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt titles to spine. Top edge red. With the photographic dust-jacket, priced at 16s. Edges a little spotted otherwise a fine copy in a bright wrapper with very light wear to spine ends. Shows extremely well. The extraordinary story of the Austrian mountaineer and Olympic sportsman's escape from wartime captivity in British India, his journey into Tibet, and his seven years' stay there between 1946 and 1952. Having been invited to stay in Lhasa, he eventually became a government employee, and even tutored the young 14th Dalai Lama for a time. The introduction is by the Lt.Col. Robert Peter Fleming OBE, a British explorer and travel writer, brother of novelist Ian Fleming, who had undertaken an epic solo journey across Asia in the 30s. From the Fleming archive assembled by bibliographer Jon Gilbert (pencil signature within).

Octavo, xv, [3], 19-314pp. Stated "first edition" on copyright page. Signed twice by Heinrich Harrer; once as "H. Harrer" and again in Tibetan. Illustrated throughout with photographs. About VG with some fading to the spine which is now a lighter hue with an area of damp to the top inch or so of the fore-edge. The book is stated FIRST EDITION. The dustwrapper is the correct first state with the all-important price of $5.00 to the bottom right-hand corner of the front flap. THIS IS A FIRST EDITION AND NOT THE MORE COMMON BOOK CLUB EDITION. The dustwrapper has a slither of fraying, creasing and minor loss to the spine tips and a couple of short closed tears with associated creases to the front panel. There is a triangular chip to the bottom edge of the back panel (not affecting any lettering). A remarkable best-selling account of pre-invasion Tibet First US edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on double-page title page recto, "For Rudy Grauer, with best wishes, from, H. Harrer, [inscription in Tibetan,] New York, March 1955". "This is the action-packed story of a young adventurer's escape from a British internment camp in India during World War II and his dramatic trek through rugged Himalayan passes to sanctuary in the Forbidden City of Lhasa" (jacket blurb). Harrer (1912-2006) was an Austrian mountaineer, part of the four-man team who made the first successful ascent of the north face of the Eiger in 1938. Seven Years in Tibet was a runaway best-seller and translated into 53 languages. It gives a glimpse of the old Tibet before the Chinese invasion of 1950. The previous owner of this copy is possibly the former mayor of Richmond, British Columbia, who the author could have met during a tour of North America, from which a number of similarly inscribed copies can be found. Octavo. Double-page title page, 45 illustrations from photographs, and double-page regional map. Original red quarter cloth, gilt-lettered spine, black cloth covers with gilt stamp of Lhasa to front cover. With dust jacket. A near-fine copy, spine ends faded, board corners at foot rubbed, in an unclipped dust jacket, spine faded, extremities rubbed, corners nicked, small closed tear to front panel, a bright and sharp example, very good indeed.
