PAPERBACK 1956 VEDITION.FOXING DUE TO AGE - CREASES ON SPINE AND FRONT COVER.PRIOR OWNER SIGNATURE ON INSIDE PAGE.TEAR ON SPINE-WILL COMBINE BOOKS TO SAVE POSTAGEIn this vivid memoir that has sold millions of copies worldwide, Heinrich Harrer recounts his adventures as one of the first Europeans ever to enter Tibet. Harrer was traveling in India when the Second World War erupted. He was subsequently seized and imprisoned by British authorities. After several attempts, he escaped and crossed the rugged, frozen Himalayas, surviving by duping government officials and depending on the generosity of villagers for food and shelter.Harrer finally reached his ultimate destination-the Forbidden City of Lhasa-without money, or permission to be in Tibet. But Tibetan hospitality and his own curious appearance worked in Harrer?s favor, allowing him unprecedented acceptance among the upper classes. His intelligence and European ways also intrigued the young Dalai Lama, and Harrer soon became His Holiness?s tutor and trusted confidant. When the Chinese invaded Tibet in 1950, Harrer and the Dalai Lama fled the country together. This timeless story illuminates Eastern culture, as well as the childhood of His Holiness and the current plight of Tibetans. It is a must-read for lovers of travel, adventure, history, and culture. A motion picture, under the direction of Jean-Jacques Annaud, will feature Brad Pitt in the lead role of Heinrich Harrer.

London England: The Reprint Society. Very Good/No Jacket. 1955. Reprint. Cloth. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall Hardback Translated from the German by Richard Graves. Introduction by Peter Fleming. On this expedition to Nanga Parbat I succumbed to the magic of the Himalayas. The beauty of these gigantic mountains, the immensity of the lands on which they look down, the strangeness of the people of India - all these worked on my mind like a spell. Since then many years have passed, but I have never been able to cut loose from Asia. How all this came about, and what it led to, I shall try to describe in this book, and as I have no experience as an author I shall content myself with the unadorned facts. Illustrated. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. Academic and Scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Educational Reference Literature.) .

  • Date published: 1956
Pan Books Ltd, London, 1956. First Paperback Edition. Softcover. Very Good Condition/N/A. ‘Seven Years in Tibet’ has been described as 'the greatest travel book of our time'. Yet even this commendation does not do justice to the unique experiences which it unfolds. No European has ever before penetrated into that inaccessible land in such strange circumstances, or has succeeded in staying there so long. Heinrich Harrer, well-known Austrian mountaineer and Olympic ski-ing champion, was climbing in the Himalayas when caught by the outbreak of war, and was interned by the British in India. With a companion, he escaped at. his third attempt and crossed the Himalayas into Tibet. After many desolate marches and strange adventures, they reached the Forbidden City of Lhasa , where they were eventually allowed to remain and earn a living. They found the traditional insularity of Tibet leavened with a new appetite for Western knowledge and ideas. Their fame quickly spread: Soon they were in great demand as advisers on many subjects of which they themselves knew little .. The day came when Harrer was presented to the young Dalai Lama, the god-king; he became the boy's friend and tutor and was permitted a degree of intimacy which awed the people and worried the religious hierarchy, After the War's end, Harrer stayed on, but when the. Communist Chinese invaded Tibet he accompanied the Dalai Lama in flight to India, and then returned sadly to Europe. His remarkable account of his experiences is illustrated with a number of his fine photographs. A film of this book has been made by Seven League Productions, with Harrer himself playing the chief part. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. 267 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. White titles spine. light wear to edges. illustrated by b/w. photo's.. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 250 grams. Category: Travel & Places; Tibet; Lhasa; Tibetan Buddhism; Tibet; Biography & Autobiography. Inventory No: 3676. .
