The first book club edition of this fascinating work concerning the Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer's experiences in Tibet. The first book club edition of this work, published in the same year as the true first edition, in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Heinrich Harrer (1912-2006) was an Austrian mountaineer and Nazi SS sergeant. This work is an autobiographical travel book, based on his experiences in Tibet, during a fascinating period of history between 1944 and 1951. It covers his escape from a British internment camp during the Second World War, and the interim period before the Communist Chinese People's Liberation Army began the 1950 Battle of Chamdo, when the Chinese attempted to reestablish control over Tibet. Illustrated throughout. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth is in excellent condition. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean apart from spotting to the fore edge and to the first and last couple of pages. Dust wrapper is bright but spotted to the spine and chipped to the upper extremities, with a closed tear to the rear of the wrap. Very Good.

E-310: E. P. Dutton. Very Good in Very Good- dust jacket. 1954. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Hardcover. 8vo. Published by E. P. Dutton and Company, New York, 1953. 314 pgs. Illustrated with 40 pages of photographs. First Edition/First Printing. DJ has light shelf-wear present to the DJ extremities (correct BOMC DJ). Bound in cloth boards with titles present to the spine and front board. Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. In this vivid memoir that has sold millions of copies worldwide, Heinrich Harrer recounts his adventures as one of the first Europeans ever to enter Tibet. Harrer was traveling in India when the Second World War erupted. He was subsequently seized and imprisoned by British authorities. After several attempts, he escaped and crossed the rugged, frozen Himalayas, surviving by duping government officials and depending on the generosity of villagers for food and shelter. Harrer finally reached his ultimate destination-the Forbidden City of Lhasa-without money, or permission to be in Tibet. But Tibetan hospitality and his own curious appearance worked in Harrer? S favor, allowing him unprecedented acceptance among the upper classes. His intelligence and European ways also intrigued the young Dalai Lama, and Harrer soon became His Holiness's tutor and trusted confidant. When the Chinese invaded Tibet in 1950, Harrer and the Dalai Lama fled the country together. This timeless story illuminates Eastern culture, as well as the childhood of His Holiness and the current plight of Tibetans. It is a must-read for lovers of travel, adventure, history, and culture. A motion picture, under the direction of Jean-Jacques Annaud, will feature Brad Pitt in the lead role of Heinrich Harrer. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 314 pages .
