The fifth impression of the first UK edition, published the year after the first impression. Translated by Richard Graves.Tipped in to the half title is a signed letter from Harrer, on the letterhead of his UK publisher, Rupert Hart-Davis. The letter is dated October 1953, and is in Harrer's native German. The letter appears to begin with 'I'm sorry Mr. Laupe!', offers the recipient 'thousands of thanks', and informs Laupe that Hart-Davis is his publisher.In the publisher's original unclipped dust wrapper.Illustrated with a colour frontispiece, double page map, and further monochrome photographic plates.Harrer's autobiography covers the escape of Harrer and his companion, Peter Aufschnaiter, from a British internment camp in India, after which they spent several years in Tibet, prior to the Battle of Chamdo and the Chinese attempted to reestablish control over Tibet.It has been said that the book "provided the world with a final glimpse of life in an independent Tibetan state prior to the Chinese invasion.Tipped in to the verso of the front free endpaper is a promotional paragraph advertising the 1956 British documentary adaptation of the work, directed by Hans Niete and written by Heinrich Harrer and Walter Ulbrich.Tipped in to the front free endpaper is the author's biography portion of the dust wrapper rear flyleaf. In the publisher's dust jacket, price-clipped, sunning to spine, with a closed tear along top edge of spine, rear hinge with a closed tear but still attached, a very good example.

With a colour frontispiece, one double-spread map and twenty-fine black and white photographs, mostly full-page or double-spread. A little fading to the publisher's top edge stain, and a little spotting to the edges and endpapers. A very good copy in non-price-clipped dust wrapper, a little spotted and chafed at the natural folds, and with some nicks, creasing and several tiny fractions of loss from the upper edge..

With 12 double-sided black and white photographic plates, a double-page sketch-map, and a colour photographic frontispiece. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt titles to spine. Top edge red. With the photographic dust-jacket, priced at 16s. Edges a little spotted otherwise a fine copy in a bright wrapper with very light wear to spine ends. Shows extremely well. The extraordinary story of the Austrian mountaineer and Olympic sportsman's escape from wartime captivity in British India, his journey into Tibet, and his seven years' stay there between 1946 and 1952. Having been invited to stay in Lhasa, he eventually became a government employee, and even tutored the young 14th Dalai Lama for a time. The introduction is by the Lt.Col. Robert Peter Fleming OBE, a British explorer and travel writer, brother of novelist Ian Fleming, who had undertaken an epic solo journey across Asia in the 30s. From the Fleming archive assembled by bibliographer Jon Gilbert (pencil signature within).

About VG with some fading to the spine which is now a lighter hue with an area of damp to the top inch or so of the fore-edge. The book is stated FIRST EDITION. The dustwrapper is the correct first state with the all-important price of $5.00 to the bottom right-hand corner of the front flap. THIS IS A FIRST EDITION AND NOT THE MORE COMMON BOOK CLUB EDITION. The dustwrapper has a slither of fraying, creasing and minor loss to the spine tips and a couple of short closed tears with associated creases to the front panel. There is a triangular chip to the bottom edge of the back panel (not affecting any lettering).
