Book unworn, faint blemishes to both covers, private bookplate on front pastedown; dj lightly worn, few tiny tears, very good condition, with price of $6.95 on front flap and five quotations on rear cover along with photo of author. Later state dj. Translated by Richard Graves. Introduction by Peter Fleming. With double-page map and 45 photographs. Signed by Harrer on the front endpaper, "with kindest regards" (to no one), and also signed in Tibetan script. Harrer was a noted Austrian mountain climber who managed to escape a British internment camp in India during World War II. It took twenty-one months for him and a fellow skilled mountain climber to trek through rugged Himalayan passes to sanctuary in the Forbidden City of Lhasa, where he became friends with the Dalai Lama and his brother Thubten Jigme Norbu.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 314 pages; Signed by Author .

Publisher's quarter red cloth cover with black cloth boards with gilt lettering to the spine and with gilt vignette (un-faded) to the front board. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR IN ENGLISH AND TIBETAN. Octavo, xv, [3], 19-314pp. Stated "first edition" on copyright page. Signed twice by Heinrich Harrer; once as "H. Harrer" and again in Tibetan. Illustrated throughout with photographs. About VG with some fading to the spine which is now a lighter hue with an area of damp to the top inch or so of the fore-edge. The book is stated FIRST EDITION. The dustwrapper is the correct first state with the all-important price of $5.00 to the bottom right-hand corner of the front flap. THIS IS A FIRST EDITION AND NOT THE MORE COMMON BOOK CLUB EDITION. The dustwrapper has a slither of fraying, creasing and minor loss to the spine tips and a couple of short closed tears with associated creases to the front panel. There is a triangular chip to the bottom edge of the back panel (not affecting any lettering).
