The leather used is from an 18th century shipwreck. Red morocco title label. Half title. The contents are clean crisp. 10 folding engraved plates. An exceptional copy. Adams and Waters 2018, Horblit 42b, and Norman 995. In 1714 the Admiralty offered a reward of 20, 000 Pounds to an individual that could accurately determine a position at sea. In other words, determine their longitude. This problem had baffled many people for a very long time. It was John Harrison, a Yorkshire clockmaker that took up the challenge in the 1730's and dedicated his life to the solution. It was a huge uphill battle with Board of Latitude to get the promised reward and it was not until he was 80 that he received his just reward and recognition.
