All hardcover, H 19cm x L 13cm, uniformly bound in half-leather bindings - light brown leather spines and marbled paper boards with light brown leather corners. The eight volumes are not individually numbered save the two comprising the George Washington biography. Varied scuffing to spine leather with some gilt tooling/lettering; spines have fractionally raised bands; rubbing to boards with their leather corners worn; Gilt top edges; light toning and foxing/soiling to fore-edges and bottom edges. Marbled patterned endpapers. At top of each title page is a three-line paternal gift ink inscription but with top two lines varyingly obscured leaving past owner's name (as third line) legible. Some toning to preliminary and terminal leaves but interior pages overall remain clean. Bindings are all firm save for Volume 2. {#1} THE SKETCH BOOK bound with A HISTORY OF NEW YORK, FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE WORLD TO THE END OF THE DUTCH DYNASTY . . . and SALMAGUNDI. Paged as 1-297, [1], 1-6, 9-307, [1], 278. SKETCH BOOK is, of course, comprised of many essays and short stories including the classics "Rip Van Winkle" (pages 30-44) and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (pages268-295). {#2} TALES OF A TRAVELLER bound with SPANISH VOYAGES OF DISCOVERY, ABBOTSFORD, MOORISH CHRONICLES, and WOLFERT'S ROOST, AND MISCELLANIES. Paged as 1-270, 1-228, 1-125, [1], 1-121, [1], 1-157. Strong scuff near spine head with modest surface chip near heel; short tears at front joint ends; slender splitting along rear joint causing some pliability to board but hinge is holding. {#3} 2) THE LIFE AND VOYAGES OF CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS bound with A TOUR OF THE PRAIRIE. Paged as 1-735, [1], 1-137. {#4} THE ALHAMBRA bound with ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN BONNEVILLE and THE CONQUEST OF GRANADA. Paged as 1-212, 3-300, [2], 1-368. BONNEVILLE with an "Introductory Notice" on pages 3-7 but without a formal title leaf but no remnant stub indicating one was ever present; GRANADA has an unpaged title leaf. {#5} ASTORIA OR ANECDOTES OF AN ENTERPRISE BEYOND THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS bound with BRACEBRIDGE HALL; OR THE HUMORISTS and THE CRAYON PAPERS. Paged as 1-387, [1], 1-322, 1-201. Very strong bumping to rear board's bottom fore-edge corner. {#6} LIFE OF OLIVER GOLDSMITH bound with MAHOMET AND HIS SUCCESSORS and THE CONQUEST OF SPAIN. Paged as 1-258, 1-499, [1], 1-138. {#7} THE LIFE OF WASHINGTON VOL. I. Paged as [2], 1-502, 5-266 with the former being Chapters I-LXXIII [Volume I] and the latter as Chapters I-XXXV [Volume II]. {#8} THE LIFE OF WASHINGTON VOL. II. Paged as [2], 267-502, 5-516 with former being Chapters XXXVI-LXIII [also of Volume II] and the latter as Chapters I-LXIII plus four appendices [Volume III]. Irving's George Washington biography was originally issued in five volumes but this text is complete albeit enumerated as a three volume set. These eight volumes are evidently a complete set as issued by International Book Company but not a comprehensive collection of Irving's writings as "Letters of Jonathan Oldstyle" (1802) and "Biography and Poetical Remains of the Late Margaret Miller Davidson" (1841) are not included. Still an attractive set. Please note that this set has an approximate shipping weight of 11 pounds (4.98 kg) and will require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.
