First US edition, first printing. This story collection contains the mythology of Middle-earth, hinted at but not fully explored in The Hobbit (1937) and The Lord of the Rings (1954-55). Tolkien worked on these stories intermittently between the First World War and his death in 1973, after which his son Christopher gathered and published them in this work. It was published in the UK earlier the same year. Hammond & Anderson A15c. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in silver and with gilt rule linking two heraldic devices of Fingolfin after a drawing by Tolkien, front cover with the device in gilt as centrepiece, top edge red. With dust jacket. Map of the Realms of the Noldor and the Sindar, large folding map of Beleriand and the Lands to the North at end, both printed in red and black. Unclipped, slightly creased jacket with a couple of small tears: a fine copy in very good jacket.
