(1970). First edition thus: one of 1950 numbered copies SIGNED by illustrator Tyler. Preface by Peter A. Tasch. Small quarto. Tiny, faint smudge to front, else fine, in russet cloth with printed spine label over illustrated boards; housed in a sturdy, illustrated paper-over-boards slipcase, which shows the residue from the removal of a spine label, but that is otherwise fine. Both sets of verse fables penned by the 18th century British poet and dramatist, beautifully printed in black with red titles, and accompanied by 66 wood-engravings done by Gillian Lewis Tyler, printed in black or red. 234 pages, plus colophon. Superb.

  • Publisher: W. Osborne, T. Griffin, and J.M. Mozley and Co, London
  • Date published: 1792
  • Format: Hardcover
First Edition. 4 x 7in. [vi.] 215pp. Bound in recent full polished calf. Gilt titling and ornamentation. 5 raised bands. Marbled endpapers. New endpapers, lacking the original blanks. Illustrated with engravings on wood preceding each fable. Though several institutional records suspect Thomas Bewick to be the illustrator, we believe the illustrator to be a different artist, among several of lesser repute commissioned to emulate Bewick's engravings after their initial commercial success. A scarce edition, with only one copy held institutionally. NEAR FINE. The title page with former owner names of the period at the topmost, a hint of darkening to the margins of the title page, otherwise is Fine having been exceptionally well maintained. The text-block is bright and completely clean and the handsome modern binding remains crisp and new. As pictured.
