First edition, stated "Second Printing, November 2000". 9-1/2" tall, 288 numbered pages includes "Notes" and Index", followed by unnumbered pages of "A Note About the Author and "A Note on the Type"; lightly textured reddish-brown paper-covered boards with tan quarter binding, gilt lettering on spine only; front board is plain; plain ivory end pages; fore edge is trimmed. Book is as new and nearly pristine: the exterior is square, hinges tight, corners not bumped, no dings on edges, head of spine is lightly bumped and heel is more creased with no fabric damage. The interior is pristine: it is clean and unmarked; no page corners folded or damaged; pages are tight and clean with no marks; no staining or discoloration; hinges are tight and undamaged; no distortion of the book from reading or improper shelving. Jacket is also pristine: it is clean; no tears, folds, creases or fading; no bumps on spine or edges; publisher's original price of "U.S.A. $26.00 / CANADA $40.00" listed on the upper right corner of front flap. Condition of book and jacket consistent with being as new and not read. No other discernible or objectionable faults on book or jacket such as marks or writing within, stains, tears, chips, or other damage that would diminish its appearance. No remainder mark, no previous owner markings or inscriptions, not price clipped, not a book club edition, not a former library book. Signed in medium thick black felt pen on the title page by the author, above his printed name; done in my presence on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at the Saint Louis County (MO) library headquarters; he was there to talk about his most recent book, "The Quartet".
