On January 26, 1885, General Gordon's heroic defence of Khartoum ended when the Mahdi's forces took the town by storm and stabbed Gordon to death. Two days later the advance guard of the relieving force steamed up the Nile and found the town in the Mahdi's hands. The tragi-comic story of the Expeditionary force that was sent to relieve Gordon has never been told in detail. It was led by Lord Wolsely, known in his day as 'our only General', it included a Camel Corps which contained the cream of the British Army's finest regiments. Why did it fail?
