Farrar Straus & Company / Ariel (NY) (1962) 1963 First Edition, Second Printing (stated). Near Fine (very light toning on the top edge, light toning to the end pages) in an almost Fine DJ, not price clipped. A beautiful, original jacket with a touch of toning to the title on the spine. No fading, the colors remain rich and dark. Almost no edge wear to mention. There is a small ghost mark where a price sticker once covered the original jacket price. The jacket has no printed mention of the Newberry Award, only the medal sticker. A signed and inscribed author signature is laid in. A really nice copy of this classic.

Octavo, [10], 211pp, [3]. Quarter blue cloth, title stamped in gilt and yellow on the spine. Stated "First Printing, 1962" on the copyright page. Light sunning along top edge, bumped top edge. Front hinge reinforced with archival repair, front pastedown partially torn, solid text block. Internally clean. Previous ownership inscription on the half-title, with offsetting from a newspaper clipping. In the publisher's first state dust jacket, partially clipped retail price on front flap, loss at heel of the spine, a few short closed tears, faint toning to the spine, a solid example. Jacket design by Ellen Raskin. The first state dust jacket, without the Newbery Medal sticker on the front panel. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle was first published by Farrar, Straus and Cudahy in 1962 after being rejected by at least 26 publishers, many of whom felt the book was too complex or controversial for children's literature. Despite the initial skepticism, the novel quickly gained acclaim, winning the prestigious Newbery Medal in 1963. (Anatomy of Wonder II, 662).

  • Publisher: Ariel Books / Farrar, Straus, and Cudahy
  • Date published: 1962
  • Format: Hardcover
Octavo, 211pp. First printing, stated, in the first-issue dust jacket, with no Newbery medal. A very good copy, with the spine gently cocked, light foxing to endpapers, a stray ink mark to leaf preceding the title page, and a small, faint stain on the top edge near the crown. Inner hinges tender, but holding. The dust jacket, designed by Ellen Raskin, presents beautifully, with a few modest and non-invasive archival repairs to the front flap fold and spine ends, including some gentle color fill-in; very good. "A Wrinkle in Time" is consistently cited as one of the greatest young adult science fiction/fantasy novels ever written. An unusually dark and existential young adult novel for its time, with a bold portrayal of evil and its young protagonists struggling with their purpose and their virtues, the story has resonated with teenage (and adult) readers since its appearance in 1962. By L'Engle's own count, the novel was rejected by at least 26 publishers before her agent ultimately returned the manuscript to her. Though she had been a modestly successful writer up to that point, she was considering closing the door on her writing career when, by a chance coincidence, she had the opportunity through an acquaintance to present the manuscript to John C. Farrar of Farrar, Straus, and Cudahy, who loved the novel, and agreed to publish it under the Ariel imprint. "A Wrinkle in Time" won the 1963 Newbery Medal, and has never gone out of print. The first printing was undoubtedly small, and as with most debut young adult novels, a significant number of these ended up in libraries. Though ours is not a fine copy, it presents quite nicely.

  • Publisher: [New York:] Ariel Books; Farrar, Straus and Cudahy, 1962
  • Date published: 1962
First edition of the author's beloved and frequently banned science-fantasy classic. A Wrinkle in Time won the Sequoyah Book Award, the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award, and the most coveted children's literature award: the Newbery Medal. The jacket is in the first state, without the Newbery Medal sticker that was affixed to later copies. The book was rejected by 26 publishers until John Farrar decided it was worth a chance. Because of its themes of magic and witchcraft, A Wrinkle in Time has been accused of being anti-Christian and is on the American Library Association's list of frequently challenged books. In her acceptance speech for the Newbery Medal, L'Engle remarked that "a book, too, can be a star, 'explosive material, capable of stirring up fresh life endlessly', a living fire to lighten the darkness, leading out into the expanding universe." Madeleine L'Engle, "Newbery Award Acceptance Speech: The Expanding Universe", August 1963, available online. Octavo. Original blue quarter cloth, grey patterned paper boards, spine lettered in gilt and yellow, fore edge untrimmed. With dust jacket. Housed in a greenish-blue flat-back cloth box by the Chelsea Bindery. Spine slightly sunned and bumped, boards faintly toned, small marks to a few margins; jacket unclipped, faintly toned, a few short closed tears at edges, tiny hole to rear flap fold: a very good copy in like jacket.

First edition of the author's Newbery award-winning novel. Octavo, original half cloth. Boldly signed by Madeleine L'Engle in a contemporary hand on the title page. Accompanied by an autograph black and white photograph of Madeleine L'Engle. Near fine in the rare original jacket without the Newbery sticker to the front panel, which is near fine, name to the half-title page, price-clipped. Jacket design by Ellen Raskin. An exceptional signed first edition. âAt once a science fiction story, a philosophical meditation on the nature of Evil and Love and a coming-of-age novel, Wrinkle broke new ground in what was considered appropriate for young readers. Rejected by several publishers for being too complex, this title has amply proven LâEngleâs belief that âchildren are excited by new ideasâ and has been credited with bringing science fiction into the mainstream of childrenâs literature. This is LâEngleâs best workâ (Silvey, 401). A Wrinkle in Time is one of the most significant novels of our time. "A book that every person should read, a book that provides a road map for seeking knowledge and compassion even at the worst of times, a book to make the world a better place" (Cory Doctorow). It went on to win a Newbery Medal, Sequoyah Book Award, and Lewis Carroll Shelf Award, and was runner-up for the Hans Christian Andersen Award. It is the basis for the film directed by Ava DuVernay, starring Storm Reid, Reese Witherspoon, Zach Galifianakis, and Oprah Winfrey.
