See Printing and the Mind of Man, 341 (1857 edition). David Livingstone (1813-73) undertook three great journeys through Africa, exploring vast regions unknown to Europeans. Appalled at the terrible effects of the slave trade on African life, he became a fierce abolitionist. His "Missionary Travels" was first published in London, 1857, and in Philadelphia the following year. The edition offered here is the only one issued with color lithograph plates, and is rare.

Brown cloth covering boards is worn through in various places around edges, esp. at corners. Faded gilt lettering on spine. Cocked to lower right. Front end page has stamp of previous owner, pages have some age discoloration/foxing but are clean and binding is good. Pages 275 to 376 have bug tunnel in inner upper corner. A handsome and tight copy of this early edition; Brown buckram boards with decorative blindstamped pattern. David Livingstone (1813-1873) was raised religiously and later accepted a job with the London Missionary Society, that sent him to Southern Africa to build three missionaries. In 1849 he went on his first expedition to Lake Ngami. In 1851 took another expedition to the Chobe and Zambesi Rivers. Later he visited the "Mosi-oa-tunya Falls" which he named "Victoria Falls". In 1856 he returned to England, where this book was originally published. After this he returned to Africa to fight the slave trade.; B&W Illustrations; 8vo 8"-9" tall; xiv, 442, 14 pages.

Illustrated with Numerous Engravings." Publisher's brown cloth binding, blindstamped on the covers; ruled, with gilt titling on the spine. Clean text; 446 pages. Very bright and clear; unfoxed; a couple of spots to the frontis illustration and TP. Corners are bumped and there is a small chip on one edge of the spine. Shows its age but is a decent copy nonetheless.
