New York: Grove Press, 1966. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. First American edition. Translated by Lysander Kemp. Small faint stain on the topedge near the crown (not affecting interior) else just about fine in a modestly toned and soiled, very good dust jacket with a bit of edgewear and an interior dampstain at the crown. Signed by Vargas Llosa on the title page at his printed name and Inscribed by him lower on the page: "(The colors of the cover are not Peruvian, but Italian and Mexican.)" The Peruvian Nobel laureate's first novel, set at the Lima military academy he attended as a teenager. The inscription is especially interesting as the military academy was so outraged by the book that, according to Vargas Llosa in *The New York Times Magazine*, 1,000 copies were ceremoniously burned on campus. According to him, one Peruvian general called it the work of a "degenerate mind," and another that it was Ecuadorian propaganda, meant to undermine the Peruvian army. (N.B. The state flag, state and naval ensign of Peru is majority red, white, and green.) Vargas Llosa's first book, with an intriguing inscription.
