London: Hollis & Carter, 1955. 1st edition. Nice copy. octavo.. hardback with dust jacket x + 180pp., ÃThis is in no sense a biography but a personal memoirÃ
London England: Hollis & Carter, 1955. In this brief memoir will be found some account of a great man who was also the greatest writer of his day. I was honoured with his friendship for a period of thirty years. Of his life before I knew him I have written little, since that is a task for his biographers. Such references as I have made to the years preceding 1922 were necessary to the telling of my story and my information on those earlier years is drawn from his writings, from the autobiography of his sister, Mrs. Belloc Lowndes, and from his conservations with me. One notable feature of the book is its 'toning down' (to say the least) of the popular legend of Belloc as the uproariously happy man, and incidentally, in so doing, it makes nonsense of much of the sillier criticism of him. It shows how the basis of his strong character was his religion, unpietistic but profoundly lived, the very principle of his intellectual life as it was also the source of his gaiety and fortitude - that fortitude which became more and more striking in his last years.morton. Some browning to end pages. Some wear and and to D/J.
