U.S. Secretary of State Robert Lansing's copy, with his bookplate on front endpaper of three volumes (these were purchased from a family library in Henderson Harbor, NY, near his birthplace in Watertown, which included many other works owned by him). Moderate damage to spines with some loss, scattered foxing throughout, ink gift notes on front endpaper of two volumes. 1849 Hard Cover. Complete in four volumes. Brown blind-stamped cloth, gilt titles. A hugely detailed and thorough history, including numerous fold-out maps and engraved plates. Covers native American tribes and early settlement up to just before the American Revolution. Sabin 53647: "A most valuable collection, consisting of Documents connected with the early history of the colony, the Indian Aborigines, and its affairs down to the year 1800; reprints of historical manuscripts, rare memoirs, accounts of early settlers; Indian biography, history, difficulties; biographical and genealogical accounts; of families; early tours into various parts of the country; statistical accounts; land tities; the Leisler papers; Sir William Johnson?s papers; the Rumsey and Fitch steam-boat controversy; churches, wars, disputes, &c., all taken from the manuscript archives of the State.
