An experimental play in nine acts, dealing with a woman's sexual affairs, deception re paternity, abortion and mental illness, the play makes copious use of the soliloquy technique to reveal the thoughts and emotions of the characters expressed in stream of consciousness. Because of its themes, it was often banned in various cities and states. It runs five (5) hours, if uncut. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It was the basis for the 1932 film of the same name, which starred Norma Shearer and Clark Gable.
