Mit der Zeit entstand so die Geschichte eines der Kunst gewidmeten Lebens, und mehr als eine Million Menschen folgten dieser Bildästhetik, mit der Patti Smith ihre Leidenschaften, ihre Hingabe, aber auch Obsessionen und Launen dokumentierte. Für die Buchausgabe hat Patti Smith noch weitere zum Teil unveröffentlichte Fotos aus ihrem Privatarchiv beigesteuert und eine Einführung verfasst, in der sie ihrem eigenem dokumentarischen Prozess nachspürt.
