The Witches.
DAHL, Roald.
London: Jonathan Cape,, 1983. First edition, Raymond Briggs's copy, with his ownership inscription on the front free endpaper, "Raymond Briggs, his book, 1984", and his posthumous book label. A superb association copy, bringing together two misanthropic children's authors: Briggs later remembered "I went once to Roald Dahl's birthday party... He was fairly curmudgeonly" (The Times, 11 December 2012). Briggs contributed artwork to The Roald Dahl Treasury in 1997. An illustrator, graphic novelist, cartoonist, author, Briggs (1934-2022) won numerous awards, including the Kate Greenaway Medal (twice), the Hans Christian Andersen Award, the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, and the Kurt Maschler Award. He noted that "the whole point of illustration is that it is literary. If it is not, it remains a drawing only... Something must be 'going on' in the illustration" (Horne, p. 124). He is chiefly remembered for Father Christmas (1973), Fungus the Bogeyman (1978), When the Wind Blows (1982) and the perennial classic The Snowman (1978). Octavo. Line drawings by Quentin Blake. Original green boards, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Foot of spine a little bumped, minor foxing to free endpapers; spine of unclipped jacket very slightly sunned, some foxing to flaps: a near-fine copy in like jacket.
