A first edition, first printing of 'The Witches' by Roald Dahl published by Cape in 1983. A very fine book in like unpriced, unclipped wrapper. The best copy we have handled.

Uncorrected proof copy of the first edition, first printing. Original red card covers with black titles to the spine and upper board. With black and white illustrations by Quentin Blake throughout the text. A better than very good copy, the binding square and firm, the covers lightly rubbed and creased. The contents, with some small ink marks to the closed text block edge and a couple of internal pages (seemingly related to the printing process), are otherwise clean and without stamps or inscriptions. Dahl's classic Whitbread Award-winning children's novel about a secret society of witches has been adapted multiple into films, a play, a musical and an opera. Sky blue boards with blue cloth to the spine and yellow and black titles. Internally it is clean and tight with just two small marks on the Half Title page. It is signed by the illustrator Quentin Blake, with no inscription, to the Title page. The dusjacket has slight edge wear and some small closed tears. It is not price clipped ($10.95) and the spine has not faded.

Number 24 of a limited 300 copies signed by Roald Dahl and Quentin Blake. Bound in original blue cloth boards stamped in metallic red. Near Fine or better with lightly bumped corner in a Near Fine original yellow slipcase with light soiling, small area of abrasion near center of opening on one panel and bumped corner. A very lovely copy.

Boldly signed by Roald Dahl on the half-title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box made by the Harcourt Bindery. Dahl's The Witches centers on the experiences of a young British boy and his Norwegian grandmother in a world where child-hating societies of witches secretly exist in every country. "Don't be fooled by those witches with their black hats, black cloaks and broomsticks, though, those are not REAL WITCHES. Real witches are exceedingly difficult to spot in the wild and dress in ordinary clothes, looking very much like ordinary people." Dahl's vital indicators for spotting a real witch include facts like they always wear gloves, they have no toes, are bald as boiled eggs and they have blue spit. “Dahl seems to have made an art form of the rediscovery that children tend to warm to the sorts of horror that make lesser mortals (adults) squirm with displeasure… He is undeniably special” (Connolly, 104).
