It also explores how, in pre-Hispanic times, women were considered the cause of all misfortune and instruments of evil to pervert clean and innocent men; and how Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz's ideas were received during the colonial era. Lastly, the work shows the social and cultural trajectory to the then-modern era -- at the time it was written, women had just been granted the right to vote and began to recognize the legal equality of women.

Aunque muchos intelectuales del país pedían que María Luisa recibiese el Premio Nacional de Literatura ​ y la crítica nacional e internacional reconoció su relevancia para el desarrollo literario de la Región sudamericana ​ , este nunca le fue concedido. Su obra, relativamente breve en extensión, se centra en personajes femeninos y su mundo interno, a través del cual escapan de la realidad. Destacó, además, por no vincularse a ninguna corriente de la época, alejándose conscientemente de las vanguardias y el criollismo. Sus obras más conocidas son las novelas cortas La última niebla y La amortajada.
