Coloured frontispiece and seven full-page coloured illustrations. 20 monochrome drawings in the text. Original publisher's quarter red cowhide brown buckram boards lettered gilt on spine and with gilt pictorial vignette on upper and lower cover top edge gilt contained in a beige card slip case lettered gilt on spine. Book plate of John Lewis on front pastedown endpaper. Loosely inserted slip giving details of the publication. The illustrator, Paul Hogarth (1917 &endash; 2001), is particularly remembered for his atmospheric cover illustrations for Penguin's Graham Greene series. A fine copy of Sassoon's classic work.
