Paperback. The third volume in Siegfried Sassoons beloved trilogy, The Complete Memoirs of George Sherston, with a new introduction by celebrated historian Paul FussellA highly decorated English soldier and an acclaimed poet and novelist, Siegfried Sassoon won fame for his trilogy of fictionalized autobiographies that wonderfully capture the vanishing idylls of Edwardian England and the brutal realities of war. Having been deemed mentally ill for his anti-war sentiments and sent for treatment, George Sherston comes under the care of neurologist Dr. W. H. R. Rivers, who allows Sherston to sort through his attitudes toward the fighting (events that have also been semi-fictionalized by Pat Barker for her bestselling and critically acclaimed Regeneration Trilogy). After six months in the hospital, Sherston leaves to rejoin his regiment. He is soon dispatched to Ireland, where he attempts to reclaim some of the idyllic fox-hunting days of his youth, then to Palestine. He finally ends up at the Western Front in France, where he is shot in the head while on a reconnaissance mission and invalided back home. As the capstone of Sassoon's masterful Sherston trilogy, Sherston's Progresswhose evocation of Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress is not at all accidentalliterally brings home the unforgettable journey of George Sherston from aristocratic childhood through war hero and anti-war martyr, all the way to wounded veteran trying to move on from the Great War.For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. Siegfried Sassoon, renowned English poet, novelist and memoirist, was awarded the Military Cross for bravery in battle during World War I; thus it was with personal knowledge and experience that he denounced the war, and criticized what he termed 'jingoism-fueled war". He is considered to have been one of the finest poets to emerge from that war - a reputation that has not diminished with time. In 1917 he bravely - and acting alone - announced his "Soldier's Declaration" against the war. This solitary act caused the authorities to imprison him in a mental institution. What could they do? He was an officer - a decorated hero who had proved his mettle in battle. In that institution he was to befriend poet Wilfred Owen. ****************************************** The book here presented, "Sherston's Progress", is the third, and final, volume of his fictionalised autobiography, called "The Sherston Trilogy". The preceding volumes are "Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man", and "Memoirs of an Infantry Officer". This trilogy is fiction, but only thinly; the only thing Sassoon changed were names. It is a brilliant work, describing the life of a young, upper middle-class gentleman before and during the First World War, and its reputation as literature only increases as the years progress. ********************************************* This is the Folio Society edition of "Sherston's Progress", and is illustrated with drawings by artist John Lawrence. The binding is attractively decorated by a drawing by Lawrence of a magnificent building - "a huge stone "pile", which extends, panoramically, from the front, across the spine, and onto the rear cover. the book is housed in a slip-case. It's a very handsome affair! ************************************************ TITLE : Sherston's Progress / AUTHOR : Siegfried Sassoon (Siegfried Loraine Sassoon, 1886 - 1967) / ILLUSTRATIONS : John Lawrence / IMPRINT : The Folio Society / PLACE : London / DATE : 1974 / EDITION : Reprint / STATUS : OP - This Edition Out of Print / PHYSICAL DETAILS : Published for members of the Folio Society; The book contains line illustrations; 171 pages; approximately 5 1/4" x 8" ; Bound in pictorial light olive-tan cloth (the illustration printed in black and rich brown; title lettered in gilt against a brown panel on spine; text-block top edge is dyed red; the whole held within a handsome slipcase, textured to simulate leather and colored brown ********************************************* CONDITION - VERY GOOD - This is a previously owned book which remains a clean, solid copy with the illustrations displaying brightly.
