Fourth Printing in wrappers: March, 1949. Boldly inscribed and signed by Spillane on the front inside cover: "Dear Clough-- Strictly commercial, this stuff--but blood and thunder is my line. Hope you like it." Mickey Spillane." Written in black ink on the verso of the front cover. A neat inscription. In glossy wrappers with a colorful, lurid drawing on the front panel showing a seated Hammer holding a beautiful blond at gunpoint while she's beginning to remove her blouse. The text has browned and the spine is dulled and nicked. A good copy only. Fourth Printing in wrappers: March, 1949.

Near fine book, light scratches on top and bottom edges and forend and rubbing on bottom right corner of spine.

A perfect facsimile of the 1947 Dutton Guilt Edge Mystery from Mickey Spillane. A brand new copy, still in shrink wrap. There are a few small holes in the shrink wrap but it doesn't appear to have had any effect on the contents. One of the 14 classic mystery facsimiles published by Otto Penzler and the First Edition Library. Otto normally didn't provide slipcases but this is a rare copy that has one. There should be a points card inside that describes the book and its publication. First Edition Library always included them but Easton Press eliminated them when it acquired FEL. However, this title was not picked up by Easton and therefore should be an original FEL with the points card. A color copy of an original points card on similar paper will be provided in case the buyer prefers to keep the book in shrink wrap (pictured). A rare copy with both a slipcase and still in shrink wrap.

This novel is important to twentieth century literature. It was originally published in 1946 and it caused much controversy because people were initially repelled by what was then considered excessive violence, sex, and vigilantism. The first printing was a mere 7000 copies. When the novel was republished in the paperback format it marked the beginning of an unprecedented literary and pop-culture phenomenon. Millions of copies were sold as readers discovered Spillane's hard-boiled style. Spillane is the father of the hard-boiled Detective novel. This is a style that has been picked up and carried forward by countless mystery writers to this day. Mickey Spillane started out as a comic book writer and he had little success. His comic book character was "Mike Danger", a tough, heavy-drinking, quick-shooting detective. When Spillane needed some money to build a house in 1946, rather than waste his already established comic character, he changed the character's name to "Mike Hammer" and history was made. Today Mickey Spillane is one of the world's best-selling and most widely read authors. This beautiful book is bound in full-tooled leather with satin moiré endpapers, satin ribbon bookmark, and 22kt gold on the spine. The paper was made especially for this edition.
