  • Publisher: Insel-Verlag
  • Date published: 1929
Leipzig: Insel-Verlag, 1929. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo size, 280 pp., text entirely in German, signed by Stefan Zweig. Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) was, at the height of his career, "one of the most widely translated and popular writers in the world" (n.b., quote from Wiki). Zweig was known mostly for his novellas, of which this work is one. In addition to "Verwirrung der Gefuhle" (Confusion of Feelings), included are "Vierundzwanzig Stunden aus dem Leben einer Frau" ("Twenty-Four Hours from the Life of a Woman") and "Untergang eines Herzens" ("The Downfall of a Heart"). This volume came to us from a descendant of two well-known actors, the brothers Gustav (1851-1925) and Heinrich (1856-1910) Kadelburg. The brothers were active in theatre in European cities such as Vienna, Leipzig, and Berlin. Gustav was not only an actor but also co-wrote a play, "The White Horse", which was so popular it played on Broadway in 1899, and was adapted many times, including into film. While we can never be certain, it is certainly possible that one, or both, of the brothers knew Zweig and it may be that is how this signed book came into the family. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full blue cloth over boards, the author and title debossed in gilt onto the front board, the same on the spine which also has a pattern in dark blue and gilt, the top edge stained yellow, Stefan Zweig's signature in ink on the front free endpaper, publisher's device on the flyleaf, this volume a reprint dated 1929, table of contents found at the end of the text, this followed by the printer's statement, this by five pages of publisher's ads; binding octavo size (7 5/8" by 5"), pagination: [1-10] 11-[274] [6], please note that all text is in German. ___CONDITION: A solid very good copy, the boards mostly clean with a few light spots, the corners gently bent but without rubbing, a strong, square text block, the hinges somewhat tender with the back hinge just starting near the head, the interior is clean, the paper lightly toned, and entirely free of prior owner markings. ___CITATION: For the first edition, published in 1927, see the Insel-Verlag bibliography, no. 1972. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note the following: (i) additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs, please inquire for details; and (ii) any taxes, duty, or tariffs charged by your country will, of necessity, be your responsibility. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
