Marie Antoinette the Portrait of an Average Woman

- Publisher: Viking Press
- Date published: 1933
- Format: Hardcover
Viking Press, 1933. First Edition. Hard Cover. Clipped dust jacket has moderate shelfwear, several chips and tears, heavily toned, especially on spine, small piece missing at top of spine. Cover has moderate shelfwear, corners, edges, and spine ends rubbed. Sunned. Minor soiling, gilt has dulled. Pages are clean and unmarked, slightly toned. Binding is tight. Hinges are perfect. Good reading/research copy. Zweig offers a nuanced, psychological portrait of Marie Antoinetteone that's rich in empathy and aimed to present her not as a mythic figure, but as a complex, often misunderstood human being. He emphasizes her contradictions, emotional struggles, and human vulnerabilities rather than royal grandeur.

Yellow cloth, titled in maroon on spine with color pictorial vignette to front cover; dark green topstain; 121pp. Light soiling to cloth, else a straight, tight, Near Fine copy. In the original pictorial dustwrapper, unclipped (priced $1.50 on front flap), lightly soiled but generally bright and unfaded, Very Good+. Zweig's controversial novella, originally published in the Viennese newspaper Neue Freie Presse in 1922. The story, filled with Freudian references, deals with the romantic obsession of an abortionist with one of his patients, leading finally to her death and his suicide ââ¬â almost needless to say, this was hardly the drink of choice for Americans in the Great Depression; the print run must have been small and sales smaller still, as today the book is unexpectedly scarce in commerce, and rarely found in nice condition.
