- Format: Softcover
This is a collection of 24 issues published in the eventful year of 1968 from arguably the most notable self-published journalist project of the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s -- the I.F. Stone Weekly. Stone was a leftist journalist of the World War II and Cold War era who became increasing unemployable in the McCarthyite 1950s. Stone responded by launching a self published periodical of keen investigative and critical reporting. He was particularly incisive in reporting on the Vietnam, international affairs and the foibles of government, Stone bird-dogged issues for his avid readers among the gatekeepers of the then all-powerful mainstream media. His work is an excellent study of the determination, quality and tactics needed to bring alternative voices and perspectives into a relatively closed media environment lacking the access to audiences available with the modern Internet. This lot includes 24 issues published Jan. 8, 1968 to Dec. 30, 1968, Volume XVI, No. 1-26 with numbers #4, #14 missing. Stone shifted to a biweekly schedule at the beginning of 1968 but continued with the name Weekly. Issue length varies from 4 to 8 pages with most issues either 4 or 6 pages. Generally in Very Good condition, with each issue stamped with the address of the original subscriber and each issue previous twice folded for mailing.
