A beautifully illustrated 'enlarged and improved' edition of Thaddeus William Harris's entomological work, with hand-coloured illustrations. An American entomologist and librarian, Harris's work was first published in 1842. This edition was published in the same year as the third edition, which was the posthumously published first illustrated edition. Illustrated with a hand-coloured frontispiece and seven further hand-coloured plates, alongside a small number of hand-coloured vignettes. Collated, complete. These plates were 'drawn from nature under the supervision of Professor Agassiz', and this volume was edited by Charles L. Flint. Â Â A lovely illustrated edition of this work by Harris, who for twenty-five years served as the librarian of Harvard University, where he oversaw the rapid growth of the library and introduced one of the earliest American library card catalogs. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to spine head and tail, otherwise externally excellent. Hinges strained, but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright, with only the odd spot. Very Good.
