Very Good (covers nice, contents clean & tight with small bookplate on the front pastedown, pasted over an old ink signature. Small 8vo., decorative light-green cloth, deckled edges, stamped in gilt, black & red; 313 pages First Edition. Signed by Akers on the title page. It appears Akers signed every copy of this title, which is a scarce book and I doubt many were produced. I have researched the two signed copies I have in stock and each signature varies slightly- they are not printed facsimilies. Akers was a Maine poet and journalist. She published early poems under the name Florence Percy. She was editor of the Portland Advertiser for many years. She was also a nurse and a government clerk during the civil war. 2 lines that she penned were popular during the civil war. "Backward, turn backward, O time in thy flight, Make me a child again, just for to-night".

ISBN . B00K6Q1O1C Hardback. No Dustjacket. This book always seems to have taken a lot of wear, when it shows up and this copy is no exception. The entire length of the spine has been reinforced with black cloth library tape, but this has been nicely done and does not look all that bad at all. interior hinges and the edges of the pastedown endpapers have been reinforced with clear magic tape as well as corner tips of the outer covers. Back free endpaper has its corners clipped. Heavy rubbing to the edges of the outer covers. Interior text block is tight and sound and book is signed on the front free endpaper by its previous owner , Howard M Danner, who is pictured in the book and served on the U.S.S. Thrush Minesweeper 18. The inscription reads "Limited Edition, Howard M. Danner Radio Operator, U.S.S. Thrush, Kirkwall Orkney Island". He has neatly marked his place in the book with small red ink marks and made a few minor corrections inhis own hand. A nice tight sound reading / reference copy of a scarce book, with the original seamans notes inside making a nice addition.

Interior Nice tight Clean Light Wear Fox, , Crabtree arrived in the California gold fields at age 5 and began dancing in the mining camps at age 8. She and her family moved to San Francisco when she was 9 and Lotta continued to attract much attention on the stage for a number of years. Several years later she came east and was a sensation in the Broadway music halls. As can be imagined, the beautiful performer was ardently persued but never married; her mother, and later she herself, invested in California real estate. She retired to New Jersey, a wealthy woman, at age 45., Lotta, who became the most popular soubrette of the seventies and eighties, began her career in the gold camps of the High Sierras, and the gambling saloons and variety halls of San Francisco. Troupes appeared not only in the theatres of the cities, but took to the road by stage coach or even on foot and played in the remotest mining towns with showers of gold as their reward. This is the story of the fascinating Lotta who emerged out of this background to become throughout the country the foremost comedy actress and the pioneer in extravaganza and burlesque. Includes much about other entertainers of the time, including Ada Menken, Lola Montez, the Booths, Julia Dean, and more. Wheat's California Gold Rush. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Hardcover.
