Introduction by Albert Bigelow Paine. Very early printing, with Roman numerals date on title page and single 1924 date on copyright page, with letters K-Y. Blue ribbed cloth with gilt foreedges; tissue interleavings. A superb set, practically unread, with no internal marks, in gleaming cover gilt. Scarce in this fine condition.

First Edition H-Y on copyright page. Two pages of ads. at rear of volume 2. These are clean tight copies with lovely bright gilt titling. The bottom leading edge corner of volume 1 bumped. Size 9.5" x 6.5", Volume 1 368 pages including index and Volume 2 365 pages including index plus 2 pages of publisher's advertisements for their other Mark Twain books. Dark navy blue buckram with Mark Twain's signature in gilt on the front covers and gilt titles to the spines. Top page edges gilt, outer edges rough cut. Title pages printed in red and black. Volume I has a frontispiece photograph of Mark Twain in bed at his home in New York in 1906, with captioned tissue protective sheet. The front endpaper is printed with a facsimile of Mark Twain's handwriting "I am writing from the grave.". Volume II has a frontispiece photograph of Mark Twain dictating his autobiography at Dublin, New Hampshire in 1906, also with captioned tissue protective sheet. Condition near fine, corners and edges very slightly rubbed, else fine, contents very clean. The "A" variant first edition as described in BAL, 3537 which contains the two pages of advertisements at the rear of the second volume and the printed tissue leaves following each frontispiece.
