Wordsworth's Country as Interpreted by his Poetry, by Easton S. Valentine. Published c. 1905 by Valentine & Sons in Dundee. 23 Halftone Photographs. OP. With interesting & Poignant Provenance.
by Easton S. Valentine (Author) / William Wordsworth ( Subject & Selections)
This lovely old book, issued circa 1905 (That according to the British Library) is "Wordsworth's Country as Interpreted by his Poetry", was written by Easton S. Valentine, and published in Dundee Scotland by Valentine & Sons. There are 23 halftone photographs that illustrate the profound beauty of the Lake District in which William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy made their home. They loved the district, and that is made manifest in William's poetry and Dorothy's journals. With a genial text describing the photographs , the book is a good one to curl up in an easy chair and relax wit one of literature's most beloved environments. It has an interesting provenance, for which read below. *********************************** The following scenes and key places are pictured in the book, and many of these places has its own special bit of poetry by one of England's greatest poets : Stybarrow Crag; The Screes, Wastwater; Furness Abbey; Esthwaite Lake; Brantwood; Windermere; Windermere (sunset); Dove Cottage; Rydalmere and Wansfell; Grasmere; Blea Tarn; A Lakeland Beck; Thirlmere and Helvellyn; Derwentwater and Keswick; Friar's Crag, Derwentwater; Borrowdale Birches; Honister Pass; Ullswater; Keppelcover Tarn, Helvellyn; Kirkstone Pass and Brother's Water; Rydal Mount; Lower Fall, Rydal; Grasmere Church. ********************************** The book is bound in a very nice blue cloth, not quite linen, but still a pretty weave. On the front, stamped in gold is the title and author, a bust of William Wordsworth, bracketed by two stalks of flowers. The end-papers, printed in pale green, present a densely repeating floral motif. The title page is strongly decorated with a Celtic-like knot pattern. It is signed in the design by the letters LB. ********************************* TITLE : Wordsworth's Country as Interpreted by his Poetry / AUTHOR : Easton S. Valentine ( 1858 - 1940) [with descriptive selections from Wordsworth's poems] / IMPRINT : Valentine and Sons / PLACE : Dundee, Edinburgh, and London / DATE : No Date [ but circa 1905 as per the inscription on the recto of the frontispiece] / EDITION : First Edition / STATUS : Out of Print - OP / DETAILS : Contains 23 halftone photographs; has a decorated title page; 64 pages; 5 1/2" x 7 1/2"; blue, cloth-covered boards and spine; gilt lettering on spine and front board; front board has a stamped gilt bust of William Wordsworth, bracketed by two stalks of flowers; end-papers printed in pale green with a densely repeating floral motif; top text-block edge is gilt (TEG) / SPECIAL ATTRIBUTES : Has a charming gift inscription, and a calling card with a brief note in the same hand. The card is that of Mrs. Clarkson Howard Slater. She was the ninth descendent of John Aldin of Mayflower / Plymouth Colony fame. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. ********************************* CONDITION VERY GOOD This is a previously owned book that remains clean and attractive, with the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR : Fraying just starting at the spine extremities; some mild weathering about the edges, and a couple of small discolorations, else the binding is attractive, with bright gilt lettering and decoration; top edge gilt is still fairly bright. All in all one of the nicest copies I have seen. / BINDING : Exposure of binding materials at the gutter in a few spots - the leaves open widely, but no leaves are detached or loose, the whole being fairly solid. / INTERIOR : Mild weathering and just perceptible foxing on end-papers; i saw on picture caption with a written page reference, else there is no marking, writing (other than the inscription), or marginalia. The gift inscription at the front of the book reads : "Bowness - on - Windemere / August 30th - 1905 / To two dear friends and / for a quiet corner / J.S.S.
