Reissue of USA edition of 1878. Appears to be complete, but lacks illustration of Captain Nares on the title page. Probably book was put together using US or UK sheets, with replacement title page. 1st USA edition published by Harper & Bros, 1877. Internally near VG, but cloth worn & a little stained; spine has been clumsily reglued. Used - Acceptable. Poor hardback in red cloth

No publication date stated but c1900. Red boards have some markings and bumping to corners and spine ends. Gilt titles on faded spine. Front hinge is cracked but binding is holding well. Age toning to contents and page edges and some scattered foxing. Occasional markings in pencil. An H is stamped to front e/p. 319pp with illustrations and folding map which has a small tear.

A good copy in the publisher's cloth, no markings or inscriptions.

Book is dark blue leather with gilt embossed edging, gilt blind-stamped on both front and back covers. Gilt stitching all around edges with raised bans on the spine. Fold-out map. Book has very light edge wear and bumped corners. Marbled page edges all around. Frontispiece is a picture of the King Of Portugal on Board The Challenger. Previous owners bookplate is on the inside of the front cover. Else book is clean & bright. Binding is tight.

In a full calf prize binding, with the bookplate of Christ's Hospital, London, to the front pastedown, awarding this volume to J.H. Palmer in 1879. In a full calf prize binding, with gilt detailing.
