"Voyages over many Seas, Scenes in many Lands." With Map and Illustrations. 8vo. 8 1/4" by 5 5/8". [xviii] 388pps. 8 pages of ad. No half-title page. Very good, first edition book, no dust jacket. Green cloth covered boards with beveled edges and blind-stamped borders. Front panel has a gilt stamped illustration of a ship, back panel has publisher's blind-stamped logo, spine has gilt lettering and graphics. Numerous illustrations, all present, in-text and at chapter heads. Twelve full page illustrations, including frontispiece, all but two with tissue-guards. The fold-out chart showing the track of the H.M.S. Challenger is attached at page 1; there is a 3 1/2" closed diagonal tear at the lower corner where it is attached to gutter; also several closed tears at the folds and some foxing. Spine edges are split and fraying. Fore-edge corner tips are rubbed through. Board panels and spine folds are scuffed; panels are a bit soiled. Black spine fold has a small indent slightly up from the center point. External page edges are age-darkened and with some foxing. Brown paper end papers; front paste down has faint pencil erasures. Faint damp stain along side edges of verso to frontispiec - xvi. Gutter is cracked at page 60 and pages 60-72 are loosely attached. causing the text block to be somewhat shaken. Text pages are age-toned and with some internal foxing throughout else clean. Please use close-up options for best inspection and in support of condition descriptions. Beveled edges to the boards. Brown coated endpapers. Previous owner's bookplates on the endpapers. Heavily illustrated with black and white plates and a large folding map. School presentation inscription on the front fly-leaf. Some wear along the edges of the boards, mostly to the tail of the spine. A tight and clean copy in very good condition. An account of a major Round the World oceanographic cruise in H.M.S. Challenger under the direction of Professor Sir Charles Wyllie Thomson, F.R.S. The major scientific emphasis was on a study of the seabed, but the narrative covers an extensive description of the places visited. Please note that this book was previously owned by Lieutenant Commander Andrew David of the Royal Navy. David's bookplate is on the front free endpaper.

Includes fold-out map in excellent condition. The boards are slightly rubbed and worn, but remain strong and sturdy. Internally, there is tanning and foxing throughout, but there are no other markings or inscriptions, and the pages within are neat and complete with all illustrations. The binding is secure.
