The Observer's Book of British Wild Flowers - Observer's Book No. 2. Printer's code: 940.846 which I believe indicates that the book was printed in Aug 1946. The book, which was the second of the series, was first published in 1937, and was then revised in 1963, 1965 and 1975. There were nine different jacket designs. Describing 200 British species with 220 illustrations 100 of which are in full colour. ***Very good in green woven cloth-covered boards with dark-blue titles to the spine and front board. The covers are clean and unmarked, with some small patches of fading to the extremities, mainly at the top and tail of the spine. No creases or tears. Corners sharp. No bumps. Page block edges just lightly foxed. There is a slight reading lean to the binding. Internally the book is also very good - clean with no inscriptions or annotations. There is some light foxing to the endpapers. Printed on nice quality glossy paper. No marks. No creases. No cracking to the binding. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 4/6 net. The dustwrapper is largely complete, but has some loss at the head and tail of the spine, and a chip at the top corner of the front panel near the spine. There is also slight loss at the corner tips, and some rubbing and creasing at the extremities, commensurate with age and handling, with the creasing mainly at the top of the back panel. No browning, and no fading to the titles on the spine. ***147mm x 95mm. 224 pages including a two-page Preface, a three-page Introduction, and a five-page Glossary of terms at the front of the book, with a comprehensive eight-page Index at the back of the book. ***'This little book is intended for the pocket to enable the observer, in his wanderings through field and woodland, to study the wonderful variety of wild flowers around him. It is not intended to take the place of the more complete works on the subject, but it is hoped that it will awaken and intensify the interest sufficiently, to all those seekers after the beauties of nature, to take up this absorbing subject for a more serious and deeper study. In a work of this extent, it will be obvious that it must necessitate an economical selection of species, and this has been most carefully carried out, with an eye to those plants which are easily accessible and more or less abundant and most likely to be found during a walk in the open country.' (Quote taken from the Preface) ***A later 1946 reprint of the 1937 first edition, in very nice original condition, and in the original dustwrapper. Whilst the Observer's books from this period are not uncommon, many of the books were handled by children and consequently show a lot of wear and tear. They can prove to be quite hard to track down now in nice condition in the original dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
