First published in 1586 and written in Latin, William Camden's survey was complete with the intention 'to restore antiquity to Britaine, and Britain to its antiquity'. His work presents a county-by-county description of Great Britain, detailing its landscape, geography, antiquarianism and history. This is the first edition of Edward Gibson's greatly expanded English language translation, featuring further additions and improvements. Sadly lacking all fifty of Robert Morden's double page engraved maps, which appeared for the first time in this edition. Rebound in full calf, with endpapers renewed. Externally, fine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age toned, with instances of light spotting and handling marks throughout. Frontispiece and title page laid down. Marginal pencil and ink notations throughout, not affecting text. Very Good.
