States "First American edition, October 1998." Number line complete 1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2. The sole blurb to jacket rear panel is that of Publisher's Weekly. No price to unclipped jacket front flap, indicating this is an early Book Club Edition. No. 1 appears to spine of jacket but NOT to spine of book. (Purple paper -- "grape"? -- spine over black paper-covered boards.) In place of the embossed yellow or gold titling of the true first printings, the "gold" jacket titling here is a flat, dull greenish hue which fades into the background. (We have lightened our scans slightly to render this titling discernible.) Jacket APPEARS near-fine, but was evidently once damp to bottom of front panel, a tidemark and some red ink transfer now visible to verso, only (not visible when the jacket is on the book.) Jacket rear panel mentions the "Smarties" prize, but no other titles in the series. "Ms. Rowling lives in Edinburgh with her daughter," and had presumably not yet begun unburdening herself of her opinions re. American politics. 309 pp. Reduced from $190.

** 1ST PRINTING OF 1ST BOOKCLUB EDITION ** VERY GOOD HARDCOVER IN FINE DUSTJACKET ** NOT A LIBRARY BOOK ** CLEAN, STAIN-FREE, UNMARKED ** SOUND AND SOLID ** COMPLETE AND INTACT ** Published by Scholastic Press, 1st Book Club Edition, 1st Printing, with 309 pages. Full number line starting with "1" on the copyright page (see our photos). This edition is at least as scarce as is the 1st Printing of the publisher's edition. Unpriced dustjacket, book's pages stack thinner than the publisher's edition though there are the same number of pages. The book itself has no major flaws, but does show brief, minor signs of use (including very occasional light smudges to the exterior page edges). The dustjacket is very nearly flawless (slight signs of use at the spine ends, otherwise jacket looks like new). Book is otherwise quite clean and stain-free, square and straight, firm and tight in its binding, no pages loose, missing, folded, or torn. The hinges are sound and undamaged, the corners are sharp and unbumped. Internally, the book is essentially flawless, pages appear pretty much like new, and all text is crisp and legible. There is no writing, underlining, highlighting, or other such markings in the book. The dustjacket is perfectly clean and stain-free, complete and intact, no tears, no chips, no pieces missing, no folds or creases (slight signs of use at the jacket spine ends). Buy with confidence, professional booksellers for 35 years, selling books online since 1995. DB75.

1st Book Club Edition from 1998. It qualifies as a bona fide 1st Edition because the publisher did not display "1" on the top of the spine of the book and the dust jacket. Condition: Fine/Fine The Fine HB Is a uniform bright red and is intact. There are expected minor folds at the spine end overhangs. The Fine DJ has two .2 cm professionally repaired tears at the spine ends and minor rubbing along some of the edges and upper and lower folds. Adapted by Steve Kloves into the 2001 Chris Columbus-directed film, and the first film in the series.
