Compared to the first printings, this is distinctly different in the following ways: 1. It has purple/black boards, not embossed boards 2. "JK Rowling" (not just Rowling) is at the top of the spine. 3. Similar to true 1st editions of the book, there is no number "1" inside a herald-like border on the spine of either the HB or the DJ. 4. On the copyright page is the full number line. 5. Unlike most book club editions, the DJ is priced at $17.95. The original price of the true first edition is $16.95 6. The DJ is flat-printed, not embossed as in the first pressings. Nonetheless, it appears to be a rare, early, unread edition and, therefore, a great value.
Stated first edition from October 1998, first printing (full number line) of the Book Club Edition (BCE). Hardcover with dust jacket (DJ). Book condition is Very Good, DJ condition is Very Good. The only notable cosmetic defect with this copy is that the edges of the textblock, interior of DJ, and pastedowns/flyleafs are lightly foxed and tanned. A smaller cosmetic issue is the fabric on the top and bottom of the spine of the hardcover is rubbed and lightly bumped. Otherwise, text is bright, clean and unmarked. Binding and hinges firm. Top/bottom of spine of DJ lightly bumped.

No #1 on the jacket spine, jacket price of $17.95 on the front flap but lacking the barcode price on back panel, Publisher's Weekly quote on the back panel. Boards black and maroon instead of red and diamond-patterned blue. Copyright page identical to true first: full number line, full year line, printed USA, #23, First American Edition, October 1998. Both book and jacket grade to NEAR FINE, a slight bump to the front of the heel on both being the only issue. The jacket is now encased in archival Brodart.
