An early fourteenth impression of the true first edition, with the number-string sequence 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 at the bottom of the printer's page. Only "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" is listed as 'also available', indicating a 1998 printing date. With Joanne Rowling as the copyright holder and a picture of the Young Wizard on the back board. ***Please note that there is no dustwrapper with this copy. ***A very good copy in pictorial colour illustrated boards. The boards are clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Bottom corner tips very slightly creased, otherwise corners sharp. There is a slight reading lean to the binding, but the spine is tight. Apart from some fading to the spine colours, the colours of the book are nice and bright. Internally, the book is also very good, with no inscriptions, ink marks or annotations. There are some light yellowing / foxing marks to the title page and page opposite. There is also some straining between these pages where the book has been opened flat. There is some slight wrinkling to the fore-edge of a few pages near the centre of the page block (please see scans). The paper stock is lightly tanned as usual. No dustwrapper. ***223 pages. 206mm x 136mm. ***An early fourteenth impression of the true first edition of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", in very good original condition. Being such a popular children's book, copies of the early printings in reasonable condition (albeit with the above mentioned faults) are far from easy to find now. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

This is a truly fabulous bright, clean copy of the 3rd impression of the Canadian edition. Confusingly it has a 4 on the number line which is as called for since the first impression had a 2. This is an early reprint and therefore is a straight replica, so I'm reliably informed, of the first Bloomsbury impression. No inscriptions and looks hardly read. Toning from the page block edge as is common with these early copies. The Canadian printers reference is the clue on the copyright page. The dust jacket is lovely and bright and not price clipped, maybe with very slight edge wear which is barely noticeable and now protected by a removable jacket sleeve. "Raincoast" at the foot of the spine of the dj. Great copy.

An eighteenth impression of the true first edition, with the number-string sequence 20 19 18 at the bottom of the printer's page. Only "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" is listed as 'also available', indicating a 1998 printing date, and with 'Winner of the 1997 Smarties Gold award at the bottom of the front board. ***The eighteenth impression of the hardcover issue is significant as it was the first to feature the revised old wizard illustration on the back cover. Illustrator Thomas Taylor has explained that he had been given little information when designing the original cover for "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone". When instructed to create an image of a wizard for the back cover, he used his father as a reference. He was not informed that the illustration was meant to represent Hogwarts' headmaster, Albus Dumbledore. This resulted in an image that did not accurately depict the character. The new illustration by Thomas Taylor with Dumbledore on the back cover was used starting from the 18th hardcover and 40th paperback printing. ***Near fine in pictorial colour illustrated boards. The boards are clean and unmarked without any fading at all, even to the spine. Head and tail of spine uncreased. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges very slightly foxed, mainly at the top edge. The colours of the book are extremely bright and unfaded. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions, marks or annotations. Pages clean and bright - just lightly tanned as usual. No creases or tears. ***In a near fine colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £10.99 on the front flap. The head and tail of the spine and extremities of the dustwrapper are just very slightly rubbed. No creases, chips or tears. The colours to the spine of the dustwrapper are just gently faded, slightly affecting the back panel near the spine (please see scans). ***223 pages. 206mm x 136mm. ***An early eighteenth impression of the true first edition of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", in very nice bright collectable condition. Being such a popular children's book, copies in nice undamaged condition are far from easy to find now. A very significant 18th impression - the first to use the old wizard illustration on the back board and back panel of the dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
